Local 24 Women
April 03, 2026The women of Local 24 showed up in full force this year during Women’s History Month, representing our union through volunteerism, mentorship, competition, and community outreach across the region.
The month kicked off on March 7, when our Women’s Committee volunteered at the 2026 Druid Hill Ice Bowl, hosted by Brother Ryan Farrell. Volunteers helped with registration and food preparation for the event, which raised $3,000 and collected 100 pounds of food for the Maryland Food Bank. It was a great way to start the month by giving back to the community.
Friday the 13th was a busy day for our members, with multiple events happening at the same time. At Howard Community College, the Jill of All Trades event introduced high school girls to careers in the trades. Journeyman Kristina Humm led a hands-on workshop, while 1st-year Apprentice Sara Bowers staffed the Local 24 booth, answering questions and sharing information about our apprenticeship program. Meanwhile, over at Northeast High School, 4th-year Apprentice Rachel Amspacher represented Local 24 at their Women’s Career Day, speaking with students about opportunities in the electrical industry.
On Sunday the 22nd, 4th-year Apprentice and Frederick County CTC alum Janasha Marshall led and coached a team of young women at the CTC Student Builder Olympics at the Frederick Fairgrounds. Her team secured an 2nd place finish, continuing Local 24’s strong tradition of mentorship and leadership.
Members also attended the 2nd Annual Maryland Tradeswomen’s Summit hosted by MCCEI. This event gave attendees the opportunity to network with fellow tradeswomen, hear from speakers about the many career paths available in the trades, and participate in breakout sessions focused on topics relevant to women in the workforce. Representing Local 24 were 3rd-year Apprentice and President of the Women’s Committee Nicole Burgos, 1st-year Apprentice Sara Bowers, Journeyman Kristina Humm, newly sworn-in Journeyman Payton Slattery and Organizer Anna Moore.
Last but certainly not least, 1st-year Apprentice Kenyona Whitaker was invited to speak at the 2026 Baltimore Mayor’s State of the City Address, where she shared her journey into the apprenticeship, the opportunities it has created for her future, and the pride, support, and camaraderie she has found with her fellow union Brothers and Sisters.
Women’s History Month may only come once a year, but the women of Local 24 continue to show up, step up, and lead every single day. Their commitment to mentorship, service, and excellence is making a lasting impact on our union, our industry, and the next generation of tradeswomen.
A reminder that Local 24’s Women’s Committee meets every 3rd Wednesday at 4pm at Fish Head Cantina, and join our Facebook group for updates- “Local 24 Women's Committee”
