Presiden Biden Celebrated Labor Day with IBEW Members

Posted on September 13, 2021 by Maggie Young

President Biden spent the day dedicated to workers with members of the IBEW.

Along with IBEW President Lonnie Stephenson, President Biden delivered sandwiches to members of Wilmington, DE Local 313 on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

He played cornhole and chatted with about 35 members of the local union. An article about the event described a moment when “the president began talking into an iPhone to a union member’s mom, telling her that he’d been with the union since he was first elected to public office in the early 1970s.”

“I’m with your son,” Biden said. “Mom, I wish you were here. I just stopped by to thank these guys. Happy Labor Day.”

IBEW International President Lonnie Stephenson called Biden “a longtime friend of working families and the IBEW.”

Stephenson wrote in February 2020, “Joe Biden has listened to IBEW members, and his energy policy has been shaped by deep, meaningful conversations with the professionals who will build and maintain the energy grid of the future.”

Biden’s interest in getting IBEW members’ point of view was further evidenced when Local 24 member Cory McCray, a state senator in the Maryland General Assembly, was recently invited to the White House.

Union Night In Annapolis

Posted on April 13, 2016 by Maggie Young

Almost 200 members of IBEW Local 24 turned out to represent our union and all Maryland working people at the annual Labor Night Rally in Annapolis on the evening of Monday, March 21, 2016.

The rally, which is coordinated every year by the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO, took place before the MD General Assembly’s Monday night session, and included members of various Maryland unions representing the Building Trades and public and private workers. Union members come out to remind our elected officials that our priorities are good jobs, fair wages and safe working conditions.

Speakers included Local 24 member and MD Delegate Cory McCray (District 45, Baltimore City) and MD Delegate Jimmy Tarlau (District 47A, PG County) who was a representative for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) prior to his election.

Local 24 Business Manager Gary Griffin, Metropolitan Council President Ernie Grecco and MD & DC AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Donna Edwards also spoke.

Local 24 members arrived by the busload for this year’s Labor Rally at the MD General Assembly in Annapolis.

Local 24 Organizer Elected to Maryland House of Delegates

Posted on November 20, 2014 by IBEW 24

247631_493242437416217_1718205831_nCory McCray, an organizer with IBEW Local 24, was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates from the 45th District earlier this month.

Throughout his campaign, Cory stressed the importance of strengthening union apprenticeship programs in order to ensure city residents have the necessary skills to do the jobs that are coming to their neighborhoods.

Besides being a vital member of Local 24, Cory is a community leader in Northeast Baltimore’s Overlea neighborhood. Along with other community leaders, he formed the BEST Democratic Club to encourage young people in East Baltimore to get involved in politics. The group now has more than 500 members.

Cory defeated five challengers in last June’s primary  by “combining a broad outreach strategy focused on social media for younger voters and a more targeted effort for long-term, older voters,” according to The Baltimore Afro-American.

All of us at Local 24 would like to thank all the members, friends and family who have supported this campaign – we know Cory will work hard and make our community proud!
