Union Electric Is Making Ravens’ Solar Project A Reality

Posted on April 15, 2016 by Maggie Young

It made headlines last summer when the Baltimore Ravens announced their plans to partner with Constellation on a solar project at Ravens Training Facility in Owings Mills, MD.

Now, Union Electric and the Local 24 members working there are turning those plans into reality. They are employing their expertise to install over 1200 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the Ravens’ practice field. That’s a worksite that is 85 feet off the ground!

The completed project is expected to generate 460,000 kWh every year.

Union Night In Annapolis

Posted on April 13, 2016 by Maggie Young

Almost 200 members of IBEW Local 24 turned out to represent our union and all Maryland working people at the annual Labor Night Rally in Annapolis on the evening of Monday, March 21, 2016.

The rally, which is coordinated every year by the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO, took place before the MD General Assembly’s Monday night session, and included members of various Maryland unions representing the Building Trades and public and private workers. Union members come out to remind our elected officials that our priorities are good jobs, fair wages and safe working conditions.

Speakers included Local 24 member and MD Delegate Cory McCray (District 45, Baltimore City) and MD Delegate Jimmy Tarlau (District 47A, PG County) who was a representative for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) prior to his election.

Local 24 Business Manager Gary Griffin, Metropolitan Council President Ernie Grecco and MD & DC AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Donna Edwards also spoke.

Local 24 members arrived by the busload for this year’s Labor Rally at the MD General Assembly in Annapolis.

Continue Your Education With An IBEW Founders’ Scholarship

Posted on January 26, 2016 by Maggie Young

Awarded only to active IBEW members, the IBEW Founders’ Scholarship honors the dedicated wiremen and linemen who, on November 28, 1891, organized the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Each year the officers of the IBEW are pleased to offer its working members scholarships on a competitive basis. It is hoped that the awards will not only contribute to the personal development of our members but also steward the electrical industry that our founders envisioned.

IBEW International President Lonnie Stephenson and Local 24 Business Manager Gary Griffin encourage all interested members to participate in the Founders’ Scholarship Program. Application forms are available at ibew.org/FoundersScholarship

The award is for $200 per semester credit hour at any accredited college or university toward an associate’s, bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in an approved field. The maximum distribution is $24,000 per person over a period not to exceed eight years.

All IBEW members who have been in continuous good standing for four years preceding May 1 of the scholarship year in which they plan to apply are eligible for the IBEW Founders’ Scholarship. Please note, if a member has been on honorary withdrawal at any time during the aforementioned period, he or she will not be eligible to participate.
