Local 24 IBEW is proud to take part in Union Night in Annapolis, when our members engage with Maryland’s elected officials and express support or opposition for legislation that is being considered by the General Assembly.

Union Night is an annual event organized by the Metro Baltimore Council AFL-CIO and the Baltimore/D.C. Building Trades Union. It brings together members of many unions, both public and private sector.

Check out the flyer below for more information. Local 24 provides buses for transport from the union hall to Lawyer’s Mall. You can sign up TODAY using our online form or by calling the Hall at 410 247-5511.

Offshore Wind Farm Hearing Dates Set

Posted on September 16, 2021 by Maggie Young

Members wanted to speak in support of Ocean City, MD wind farm during Public Service Commission (PSC) online virtual meetings on September 28 and 30.

The IBEW has established a clear record of support for wind farms and the clean energy they produce. Wind power is a source of great union jobs, both during construction and for day-to-day operation. Now that things are moving forward related to the offshore wind farm to be built off the coast of Ocean City, MD, it is time to rally Local 24 members and retirees to show our support.

Local 24 Business Manager Mike McHale is asking members to volunteer to testify in favor of the project during two PSC meetings on Tuesday, September 28, at 6:00 pm and Thursday September 30, at 6:00 pm. Because the hearings are virtual, no travel will be required in order to testify.

The Baltimore and DC Building Trades, with which Local 24 is affiliated, will provide talking points to all members who sign up to testify. The talking points will be a great resource in helping to develop testimony. If you are able to testify at one of the hearings, please send an email to NCaruso@ibewlocal24.org to get the ball rolling.

Support Needed for Baltimore Project Labor Agreement (PLA)

Posted on January 27, 2020 by Maggie Young

Baltimore City Council is introducing Project Labor Agreement Legislation at its meeting, Monday 1/27 at 5 p.m. at the City Council Building (100 N. Holiday Street, Suite 400, Baltimore, MD).

The Baltimore & D.C. Building Trades is asking all construction tradespeople, especially those who live in the city of Baltimore, to attend the City Council meeting to show support for this important legislation. Please plan to come out for the meeting TONIGHT!

This legislation would require a Project Labor Agreement on city funded projects over $25 million, or any long term project that covers multiple locations over $15 million.

Project Labor Agreements:
  • Have been used for decades for public and private sector projects, including for significant projects in Maryland.
  • Increase project efficiency by setting uniform ground rules that apply to all contractors working on the project.
  • Help project owners ensure that all goals are met on the project and that the project is completed in a timely way.
  • Help prevent wage theft from workers, which has become an epidemic in the Construction industry.
  • Are competitive agreements that do not prevent any contractors from bidding.
  • Are a great tool for encouraging local hiring and connecting multi-employer apprenticeship programs to projects that have guaranteed work force outcomes. Project Labor Agreements help create careers for people in construction, not just jobs.

Project Labor Agreements DO NOT:
  • Discriminate against non-union workers. Anyone willing to work under the terms of the agreement is free to apply for work on the project. In fact, federal law prohibits employers from discriminating against employees based on whether they are union members.
  • Discriminate against non-union contractors. Any contractor is allowed to bid and be awarded work on the project. Non-union contractors are awarded work on projects covered by PLAs.
  • Project labor agreements are not “UNION ONLY.”

Keep The High-Speed Train Project On Track – Call or Email MD Delegates

Posted on February 14, 2018 by Maggie Young

The following bills are being heard TOMORROW, Thursday February 15, 2018 in the House Environment & Transportation Committee. Please contact the committee members listed below and tell them that we support  the Maglev project and the 74,000 jobs it will bring for our members and our community.

According to Jeff Guido of the Baltimore DC Building Trades, these “bills are intended to slow down and impede and create obstacles for the project to the point it becomes impossible to proceed through the red tape.”

HB 637(SB1004) – Requiring the governing body of a county to hold a public hearing before the transfer of an asset of the county as part of the development of a high-speed transportation system; requiring notice of the public hearing to be delivered by first-class mail to homeowners and businesses within 500 feet of the asset; requiring a supermajority vote for approval by certain county and municipal entities of a transfer of an asset of a county as part of the development of a high-speed transportation system; etc.

HB 638 (SB1005) – Requiring a county, before the transfer of an asset of the county as part of the development of a high-speed transportation system that passes through the county, if the asset is located in a municipality, to negotiate a certain written agreement with the municipality concerning the approval by and financial remuneration to the municipality.
