Professional Contractor Supplies Awards TV Winner At April Meeting

Posted on May 9, 2018 by Maggie Young

Doug Eichelberger of Professional Contractor Supplies announces the TV Drawing winner.

Doug Eichelberger, of Professional Contractor Supplies (PCS), was on hand at the April regular membership meeting to make one lucky member’s night.

During Local 24’s annual Tool & Boot Sale in March, PCS offered some extra incentive to shop by sponsoring a drawing for a TV. All IBEW customers were eligible to enter, and had to be present for the drawing at the April meeting to win.

Brother Jonathan Lewis was the winner of the PCS TV drawing.

Congratulations to Brother Jonathan Lewis, who took home the prize – we hope you enjoy it! And thanks to PCS for their sponsorship of the contest.

Three Members Receive 60-Year Pins At April Meeting

Posted on May 3, 2018 by Maggie Young

BROTHER DONALD M. CURTIS

There are not many people who can say that they have been a part of an organization for sixty years, but several Local 24 members can lay claim to that bragging right! Among those people are Brother Donald M. Curtis, Brother Edward W. Mitchell and Brother Charles E. Patterson. These stalwart members opted to be among their union brothers and sisters as they were recognized for reaching the impressive 60-year milestone.

BROTHER EDWARD W. MITCHELL

Local 24 President John Rankin and Business Manager Pete Demchuk were pleased to acknowledge these brothers and publicly present them with their 60-year pins and certificates at the April 2018 regular membership meeting.

The certificates that each member received reads:

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers,
in sincere affection and deep gratitude,
presents this citation and pin
in honor of loyal and faithful years
of membership in our Brotherhood.

BROTHER CHARLES E. PATTERSON

Action Needed To Support Offshore Wind Program – Clean Energy And Good Jobs

Posted on March 2, 2018 by Maggie Young

We have an exciting opportunity to bring hundreds of jobs to Maryland through the offshore wind program, including jobs in manufacturing, construction, and engineering.  These jobs will be located throughout the state from the Eastern Shore to Baltimore to Frederick. The offshore wind program also brings multi-million dollar investments in local ports and fabrication facilities.

Today we are asking you to empower our great state to lead the way. This is your opportunity to put politics aside and be a leader in a new energy sector that benefits Maryland in many ways!

What Can You Do?

We need you to tell your state legislature you support offshore wind.  Please go supportmdjobs.com and fill out the petition.  You can do this as a private citizen. Also spread the word- tell your friends and family.  All of our voices need heard.

Stop Senate Bill 1058 and House Bill 1135! This bill will kill the progress we’ve made.

Two bills (Senate Bill  1058 and HB 1135) will be he heard in Annapolis for public hearings for on Tuesday, March 6th before the Senate Finance Committee  and Thursday, March 8th before  the House Economic Matters Committee at 1:00pm.  These two pieces of legislation are identical bills and require that offshore wind projects to be constructed and operated no closer than 26 nautical miles.  This will delay and potentially stop the two Maryland projects approved by the MD Public Service Commission from being built.   You may have seen press on OC’s opposition.

If you have been following the offshore wind market is happening in the United States.  States like MA, NY, and NJ are moving forward with large 3500 MWs,  The only loser in this view shed issue fight will be the Maryland business community. As a reminder, the MD PSC requires both developers to spend $1.8B in state spending, spurring the creation of almost 9,700 new direct and indirect jobs and contributing $74 million in state tax revenues over 20 years.

Ocean City uses the argument that they will lose tourists and property will be devalued when the offshore wind project goes forward. Many years ago, OC along with other municipalities felt the same way when the State was going to ban smoking in restaurants.  Obviously, the economy continued to thrive.  Block Island tourism economy has not been damaged from the Block Island Wind Farm. In fact recreational fishing is thriving. Check this out:  https://awea.filecamp.com/public/file/2d2f-dbj8mbdu

Baltimore JATC, State’s First Apprenticeship Sponsor, Joins Maryland Apprenticeship Ambassador Program

Posted on February 20, 2018 by Maggie Young

(From right) Local 24 IBEW Business Manager Pete Demchuk, Local 24 President John Rankin, MD Chapter NECA Representative JT Thomas, Labor Secretary Kelly Schulz, Baltimore JATC Training Director Neil Wilford and a group of apprentices commemorate joining the Maryland Apprenticeship Ambassador Program.

The following is a press release issued by the MD Dept. of Labor, Licensing and Regulation:

BALTIMORE (Feb. 12, 2018) – Maryland Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz today welcomed the state’s oldest registered apprenticeship sponsor to the Maryland Apprenticeship Ambassador Program. The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry of Baltimore, a registered apprenticeship sponsor since 1961, joins the state’s incentive program to help raise awareness about registered apprenticeship.

“The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee’s demonstrated commitment to apprenticeship makes them the perfect advocate for apprenticeship in Maryland,” said Labor Secretary Schulz. “Over their 56-year history, they have trained almost 2,000 apprentices. That experience will help us build upon our already successful program and expand apprenticeship to all industries and occupations throughout the state.”

Comprised of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 24 and the Maryland Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, Inc., the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee has a long history of training electrical apprentices.

“The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 24, along with our partners the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), is committed to apprenticeship training,” said John Rankin, president of the IBEW Local 24. “For more than 55 years, the apprenticeship program has provided the opportunity for men and women to work alongside highly skilled union electricians, in addition to classroom training at our state of the art training center. They earn while they learn, leading to a career – not just a job – earning $70,000 a year, plus benefits.”

Over the past 30 years, 1,331 electrical apprentices have completed apprenticeship training. Today, 343 electrical apprentices are in the program.

“Apprenticeship offers training, skills, and financial benefits that will change lives,” said Jonathan Thomas, executive director of the Maryland Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. “The Maryland Apprenticeship Ambassador Program is a great promotional tool, and I applaud Governor Hogan and Secretary Schulz for acknowledging that apprenticeship offers a solid foundation, not just for a better career, but for a better life. The Baltimore electrical apprenticeship program and its affiliated contractors are honored to be recognized by the ambassador program.”

Apprenticeship ambassadors voluntarily cultivate and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, encouraging job seekers and businesses to engage in apprenticeship opportunities. For their commitment, ambassadors receive special recognition from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, customized advice and counsel on navigating the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program, the latest in apprenticeship news and emerging workforce trends, and valuable media exposure.

About Apprenticeship in Maryland

Since the beginning of the Hogan administration in January 2015, the number of registered apprentices has increased by nearly 20 percent. Today, more than 9,500 apprentices work in over 230 different occupations. In 2017, 15 new registered apprenticeship programs were created and seven were re-activated, resulting in a record year for the program.

For more information about registered apprenticeships or to be considered for a Maryland apprenticeship ambassadorship, contact info@mdapprenticeship.com or call 410-767-2246.

Organizing Leads To Success At BGE

Posted on March 9, 2017 by Maggie Young

We would like to take this time to congratulate the men and women of Baltimore Gas & Electric in their great victory, forming IBEW Local #410. It was a long road to travel. The workers of BGE started working to organize their union over 20 years ago. Local 24 is grateful for every opportunity to help in this tremendous journey.

This latest campaign was an effort that received support from volunteers and organizers from all over the country. Members flooded in from the West Coast, Mid West and of course the East. I can say that everyone that took part was dedicated to the labor movement and to the new members of Local #410. It was amazing to see what can happen when a group works together to achieve a common goal.

We look forward to working with our new brothers and sisters as they form the foundation for many prosperous years to come.

In Solidarity

Gary R. Griffin
