Union Electric Is Making Ravens’ Solar Project A Reality

Posted on April 15, 2016 by Maggie Young

It made headlines last summer when the Baltimore Ravens announced their plans to partner with Constellation on a solar project at Ravens Training Facility in Owings Mills, MD.

Now, Union Electric and the Local 24 members working there are turning those plans into reality. They are employing their expertise to install over 1200 photovoltaic panels on the roof of the Ravens’ practice field. That’s a worksite that is 85 feet off the ground!

The completed project is expected to generate 460,000 kWh every year.

Union Night In Annapolis

Posted on April 13, 2016 by Maggie Young

Almost 200 members of IBEW Local 24 turned out to represent our union and all Maryland working people at the annual Labor Night Rally in Annapolis on the evening of Monday, March 21, 2016.

The rally, which is coordinated every year by the Metropolitan Baltimore Council AFL-CIO, took place before the MD General Assembly’s Monday night session, and included members of various Maryland unions representing the Building Trades and public and private workers. Union members come out to remind our elected officials that our priorities are good jobs, fair wages and safe working conditions.

Speakers included Local 24 member and MD Delegate Cory McCray (District 45, Baltimore City) and MD Delegate Jimmy Tarlau (District 47A, PG County) who was a representative for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) prior to his election.

Local 24 Business Manager Gary Griffin, Metropolitan Council President Ernie Grecco and MD & DC AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Donna Edwards also spoke.

Local 24 members arrived by the busload for this year’s Labor Rally at the MD General Assembly in Annapolis.

Local 24 members and leaders will be gathering in Annapolis on Monday night, March 21, 2016 for the annual Labor Night in Annapolis.

Planned by the Metropolitan Baltimore Central Labor Council, this event brings together union members from all sectors, including the Building Trades and public and private sector workers.2016Labor Night in Annapolis

Through our presence in numbers, as well as the messages delivered by local union leaders and scheduled speakers, union members are able to let our elected representatives in the Maryland House of Delegates know how we feel on bills related to issues including

  • Prevailing wage laws
  • “Right to Work” (for less) legislation
  • Workers safety and more

Make plans to join the Rally and strengthen the voice of Maryland’s working people. You can meet with other members at the Hall in Baltimore and ride into Annapolis on buses, or if it’s easier just meet the group at Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis at 6PM. Wear your union jackets, shirts and hats to show that you are a proud member of Local 24!

2015 Childrens Christmas Party 187

We hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas!

Much of the joy of Christmas comes from sharing the excitement of our little ones. One of the best ways to get ready for Santa is to attend our Children’s Christmas Party. This beloved annual event brings together Local 24’s active members and retirees, along with their children and grandchildren, for a visit with St. Nick and a whole lot of fun.

As you will see from the photos, everyone was in the holiday spirit!

Say NO! to Fast Track

Posted on April 28, 2015 by Maggie Young

Fast Track flyer

Use this tool if you prefer to email your Representative to say NO! to Fast Track for any trade deals.

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

After delays and continued secrecy, Fast Track legislation has been introduced in Congress. Fast Track will make it easier for bad trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) which will ship American jobs overseas, and drive down wages; it will stack the deck against good jobs and the middle class.  We need members of Congress to stand with us in opposition to this bad bill and urge your elected representatives to vote NO on Fast Track.  It’s been introduced in the Senate already – S.995 — and it’s about to be introduced in the House;  we could see a vote on Fast Track in just 10 days from now.

Attached is a flyer on Fast Track, with a call-in number to reach your member of Congress – please make sure your local is engaged on this issue, and work with your business manager to distribute this flyer and ask members to take action right now by calling Congress.  We will be in touch early next week with more information on what IBEW members can do to help stop Fast track, and stop TPP.  Please contact us with any questions.  Thank you.

In solidarity,

Ann Miller
